Kindergarten curriculum at a glance

September: Welcome to Kindergarten! The focus for this month will be getting to know one another. We will discuss family relationships as well as friendships outside the family. The next step will be to concentrate on establishing our daily routines and classroom rules. At the end of this month, homework will be introduced in addition to our normal daily class work. This will help your child learn at home through your parental guidance.

October: Counting, Calendars, and Shapes This month’s activities will be centered on establishing a foundation in mathematics. This will be achieved through a focus on counting (forward and back, from 1 to 10), using and understanding the calendar, and an introduction to geometric shapes and symmetry.

November: Language Arts & Fun with Science This month we will continue your child’s development of letter recognition and sound correspondences. Additionally, we will focus on geometric shape recognition and additional science concepts. Subject matter will be conveyed through hands-on activities such as butter making for our annual Thanksgiving Feast.

December: Language Arts Since Language Arts is of great importance to how your child learns and grows, this month will also be dedicated to continued concentration on development of letter recognition and their sound correspondence. Reinforcement activities, such as letter and number books, will be used to encourage the correct formation of numerals and one to one correspondences.

January: Map Study We will begin the month learning about different geographical regions around the world. We will end with the introduction of maps from your child’s neighborhood to the entire world! In addition, we will continue focus on “sight words” through flashcards and games.

February: Presidents and Our Country Since Presidents Day falls this month, we will talk about what it means to be president as well as about the leaders of our country through the years. We will also learn about important national symbols of our land, such as the Statue of Liberty, The American Flag, The Bald Eagle, and The Liberty Bell.

March: Learning While Having Fun While we continue to build on all the concepts we have learned thought the year, we will have some fun in the process. Since March marks the birthdays of both Dr. Suess and Johnny Appleseed, fun activities will be centered around these popular childhood favorites.

April: The Life Cycles of Science While the first day of spring may be in March, we save the learning of the life cycles for April. Activities such as butterfly and frog study, and planting beans help your child appreciate the wonder of nature.

May: Math Concepts This month builds on your child’s understanding of mathematics by using skip counting, evens and odds, and forward and back from twenty. We will expand on money concepts through the manipulation of play currency. We will use the “What’s My Rule” game to aid in the understanding of addition and subtraction.

June: Wrapping it Up We evaluate the progress of your child on all of the concepts we have worked on though the year and close out the year with a graduation ceremony.
